Cherokee County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population was 42,521. Its county seat is Tahlequah. The county's namesake is from the Cherokee Indians when the county was part of the Cherokee Nation of Indian Territory from 1838 to 1907 when Oklahoma became a state.[citation needed] .
